On 30th May, the following pinned tweet from the House of Cards twitter handle indicated that the fifth season of the much awaited season has arrived.

Warning: This review post of the first episode may contain content, that may be construed as spoilers, though efforts have been taken NOT to give away much of the plot.

House of Cards S05E01 “Chapter 53″ begins with the cold open of Claire’s (Underwood) poised address to the Nation, asking to ‘speak up” /report any suspicious behaviour of anything suspicious, including the profound line

…Watch out for each other, and YES, watch other!… -“Claire Underwood”

This is in continuation from last season’s focus on the terrorism group ICO. This season, it looks like ICO will be a focus point.

Next, the POTUS (Frank Underwood) ‘ambushes’ the House discussion on the POTUS’ crimes (from last season) to steer it to a playbook exercise to pass a “declaration of war” on terror against ICO (the terrorist group). This includes a lot of over-the-top drama.

Next is the POTUS attending the funeral of the victim of the terror attack. And after that is Claire debating Tom (Hammerschmidt) regarding the article that published the President’s crimes. All this while, there is an interspersing of the banter between Frank and Will (Conway), while Will tries to gather momentum for his ambition to the White House.

The middle of the episode drops off with boring bits.

But the concluding part of the episode has an unexpected twist. And there are some good dialogues written into the script and executed well.

All in all, a good start to the fifth season of House of Cards, which promises a good deal to look forward to. I leave you with this….

And yes, Frank Underwood is coming to India with the television premiere of House Of Cards Season 5 on Saturday, 3rd June, 5 PM onwards, only on Zee Café! More details @

It was a ‘back with a bang’ season starter. Kevin Spacy potrays the POTUS with such an authority that I almost want him to be a real life POTUS. And can’t help drawing parallels between his character and the real deal at this moment.

@Nilesh: Indeed. I especially love the “breaking the fourth wall” bit he does every now and then.
