With the latest plans to radically overhaul NREGA (National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) has a lot of politicians excited without any valid reason.
The NREGA has been a radical scheme introduced by the UPA Government.
The scope of the Act is as follows:
An Act to provide for the enhancement of livelihood security of the households in rural areas of the country by providing at least one hundred days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
A very good initiative, I must say. But, is it necessary to rename it when the NREGA is already underway (and very well implemented, looking at the stats). It looks the GANDHI name is attached to every scheme to give it a stamp of approval.
Surely, the Indian Legislature has better things to do….
